First visitors came to cave in the middle Ages (Janez Vajkard Valvasor was the first one who reported about it) and in 1818 it was arranged for tourism. At first, the torches illuminated the cave and later on, they installed electric lightning and a two-tier railway track. So today a circular route takes the visitors towards a new adventure.

Postojna Cave offers its visitors about 5 kilometers of routes, stalactites and other beauties of underground world which are seen in multiple underground halls and galleries, including Concert Hall which is known for exceptional acoustics and has sufficient space for 10,000 people.

But there is also something else in this underground world – life. It was believed for a long time that these underground caves are not suitable place to live but in 1831 cave explorers discovered a small bug (Leptodirus hohenwarti) and later on a so-called human fish or olm (Protenus anguinus). At first it was believed that this animal represents a dragoon’s offspring and even today its origin is not explained. The olm is blind but it has a good smell and touch.

You can find more sights around Postojna Cave, but one is a must-see: Predjama castle.  This picturesque, magnificent, defiant, mysterious and impregnable castle has been perched up in the middle of a vertical 123-metre high cliff for more than 700 years. Its romantic appeal is further emphasized by the idyllic River Lokva, which disappears into the underground below the castle. The most famous inhabitant of the castle was the knight Erazem of Predjama, who rebelled against the imperial autocracy in the 15th century. Nowadays Erazem is the main protagonist of numerous legends, which on the one hand glorify him as a passionate, handsome, noble knight, while on the other hand he is described as a bandit and as a robber baron, who was killed while he was in the toilet. In addition, here is a fun fact: world-famous writer George R. R. Martins was enchanted by the castle and has reportedly said that it might be included in his saga A song of ice and fire.
